Ludwigia inclinata is a fast-growing plant. Fast, in this instance, would mean that if given the right conditions, it can literally take over a tank within two weeks. This is no beginner’s plant, though. Ludwigia inclinata is very delicate. It will immediately show that it is not happy. Its fragile, oval-shaped leaves would quickly curl up or become pale if given unfavourable conditions, and it is one of the fastest plants to melt if the water is lacking in CO2. Its stems are more delicate if compared to the more common and adaptable Ludwigia Repens or Ludwigia arcuata, but its beauty is unparalleled. Its soft appearance, in fact, is part of its charm. Some of its forms are very popular stem plants in the aquarium hobby. They have been known to be very beautiful and delicate still. Perhaps the most sought after is Ludwigia’ Pantanal’.
Ludwigia Inclinata’s leaves are beige to light orange. They are thinner than the usual stem plant leaves, are-so much so that veins are apparent, which only adds to the beauty of this plant. Care must be given when handling it as it is easily damaged. It is a good thing that it can easily replace its leaves within a day or so.
All varieties of Ludwigia Inclinata require medium to heavy CO2 supplementation if within an enclosed environment like an aquarium. This is one key factor for Ludwigia inclinata’s success in the tank. Make sure that CO2 is adequately dispersed and dissolved in the water. There are a lot of ways to diffuse CO2 in the tank water. Look into some of these ways and determine which works best for the tank.
Water Parameters
Keep Ludwigia Inclinata in soft and slightly acidic to neutral pH water. CO2 and nutrients dissolve better in the more soothing water, which is necessary to keep this plant healthy and thriving in the tank. The temperature should be around 22-28 degrees Celsius. Most aquatic plants labelled as “difficult” require the water temperature to be in that range. This range is cold enough for CO2 to dissolve correctly and yet warm enough for the plant’s metabolism.
Lighting
Ludwigia inclinata and all its variations love light. Intense lighting should be provided if this plant is expected to show its true colours. Without proper lighting, the new growth will be leggy within a matter of days, and the plant will start to display smaller, paler leaves with a very unhealthy appearance. This plant is described as “difficult” and should not be attempted by newbies to this hobby.
A full spectrum of lighting is recommended for this plant to show its colours, although 6500-7200 k colour temperature should be sufficient for photosynthesis.

Planting and Position in the tank.
This plant and all its variants are well used in the Dutch aquascaping style, wherein the focus is not on the conceived design but on the health and vigour of the individual species used in it. This plant can be used as a background or a midground plant.
Trimming and Maintenance
Trimming involves cutting the top, healthier portion of the plant and replanting it. The lower half can be discarded or planted for propagation. Each leaf is precious. Do not trim as if trimming a hedge or a shrub. Extra care must be given not to damage any leaf.
The last factor in determining Ludwigia Inclinata’s success in the tank is the religious dosing of fertilizers. Look for a dosing regime that works best for the tank and stick to that regime. This plant would also appreciate regular dosing of iron and trace minerals. Frequently, dosing regimens for Dutch tanks should be sufficient.
